Volvo EX30 Electric SUV to Hit India in 2025 for Rs. 40 Lakh

Volvo Cars India has confirmed their plans to release the EX30 compact electric SUV by late 2025. This launch comes as part of Volvo’s commitment to India’s market, as it will serve as the company’s most affordable EV in India, marking a step forward in their electrification strategy for the country. Moreover, the EX30 will play a crucial role in Volvo expanding further in the Indian market, which is rapidly accepting EVs.

Volvo will position the EX30 as their entry-level electric SUV, as it is built on Geely’s SEA platform which integrates other international electric vehicles. This will promote wider adoption of premium electric vehicles in India, as the market is increasingly moving towards sustainable mobility.

Plans for Local Assembly to Improve Affordability

Volvo cars India MD, Jyoti Malhotra, has shared plans to locally assemble the EX30, which could significantly impact its pricing. This comes after the company’s successful saasembly of the EX40, C40, and other internal combustion vehicles in India. This is part of Volvo’s strategy to lower the price and compete in the market more effectively.

Like how the BMW iX1 LWB reaps the perks of local production, local assembly could furnish the EX30 with a considerable price edge over local rivals. This would serve the Indian government’s initiative to bolster domestic production. In return, it would give a boost to the EX30’s competitiveness in India’s booming luxury electric market.

Design Philosophy and Advanced Features

The EX30 retains some of the design cues from Volvo’s flagship EX90 SUV, which include a closed off grille and ‘Thor’s Hammer’ headlights. The compact SUV which is just over 4.2 meters in length showcases Volvo’s contemporary Scandinavian design and is built with a bare minimum style and eco-friendly materials.

The 12.3 inch screen which is mounted vertically is powered by Volvo’s Google based infotainment system and is integrated with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The interior features sustainably recycled and renewable materials which displays Volvo’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

Powertrain Options and Performance

EX30 is available globally with three powertrain options and two batteries. The base variant is equipped with a 271hp rear motor and a 51 kWh battery. This configuration offers a range of 342 km. With a larger 69 kWh battery, a single motor variant can exceed 474 km range. A dual motor variant with 427hp is available, but specifications for the Indian market are still pending.

Anticipated Pricing and Market Competition

With the launch of Volvo’s newest SUV, the EX30, at Rs 40 lakh (ex-showroom) price, it would closely compete with other players in the market such as Ioniq 5, BMW iX1 LWB, BYD Seal as well as the upcoming Mahindra XEV 9e. If the local assembly plans go into efect, the price could be even more aggressive and the local EX40’s 55 lakh price could be slashed by 15 lakh considering local assembly benefits.

With the aggressive pricing strategy, it would allow the EX30 to appeal as a “premium product” for consumers who want to shift to “electric mobility”. Volvo’s reputation is well known for the luxury features, safety standards, and build quality, thus, setting the bar high for the competition in this space.
